Extraction entries, surface disturbance, workings, natural voids, drilled wells and shale fracture zones, aggregated by county from state records. A time control adds or removes mine permits and shale wells by period. Every layer carries an evidence tier.
Bars count records by decade of the permit's issue date, not by when digging began. Industrial-mineral permits cluster after 2000 because the database holds current permits, not their predecessors. Shale wells count by spud year.

Record counts were retrieved by live REST query on 15 Oct 2026, except where the source column names a publication. Point geometry stays in the source services; this page aggregates to county. The "Activity in selected period" map layer and the 3D time scaling are schematic: statewide period totals are spread across counties in proportion to AML sites (coal permits) and to the 2018 shale layer (shale wells), because the permit services carry no county field. Natural cave entrances have no statewide count in the services queried.
