Prisoner's Dilemma

A situation in which each participant gains by defecting, yet all end up worse off than if every one of them had cooperated.

Why it matters now

The atmosphere, the high seas, and every shared aquifer are prisoner's dilemmas at planetary scale. Naming the structure is the first practical step, because the dilemma dissolves the moment defection becomes visible, costly, or simply unnecessary. Monitoring satellites, border carbon adjustments, and cheap clean alternatives are all ways of changing the payoffs rather than lecturing the players.
