A system that includes itself within its own description or operation.
Why it matters now
Humanity is the first geological force that can read its own stratigraphy. This reflexivity is exactly what makes a self-limiting Anthropocene conceivable: a species that can name the epoch it is creating can in principle choose its shape. It also introduces the strange loops that Gödel and Hofstadter explored, where a system's self-knowledge has genuine limits.
