Why it matters now
It is the engine beneath biology and beneath every exponential curve, benign or otherwise. Practically, self-replicating systems are the cheapest deployment mechanism known: seed banks, coral nurseries, farmer-multiplied varieties, and mycelium materials all scale by growing rather than by manufacturing. Anything that reproduces itself needs funding once rather than forever.
