Why it matters now
River basins, coastlines, lungs, and tree canopies are all fractal because branching is the cheapest way to move something through a volume. Fractal geometry is therefore a design library for efficiency, and it also explains why coastline length depends on the ruler used, a fact with real consequences for flood exposure estimates.
