Small recurring wiring patterns that appear far more often in real networks than chance would allow.

Why it matters now

The same few circuits turn up in gene regulation, neural tissue, food webs, and organisations, because each performs a useful function such as filtering noise or producing a delay. Recognising motifs means reusable design: a feedback pattern that stabilises a cell can inspire one that stabilises a grid or a fishery quota.
