Simulation that builds a system from the bottom up, giving each individual its own rules and letting the aggregate emerge.

Why it matters now

These models are the closest thing available to a laboratory for policy. They let a city test an evacuation plan, a ministry test a subsidy, or a basin authority test a water allocation before anyone bears the consequences. Their honest limitation is that they encode assumptions, which is also their honest strength: the assumptions become visible and arguable.
